NELSON, Bryan John

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Bryan John Nelson, who passed away peacefully in the early morning on August 10, 2016 at the age of 79 years. Pre-deceased by his father Howard and mother Alberta, Bryan is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years Margaret (Marg); children Denise, Darrell (Joanne) and Douglas (Shirley); grandchildren Erin (Sasha), Alysha, Brittany, Brandon, Dylan, Morgan and Trevor; great grandchild Riley, and extended family members.

Bryan (nicknamed “Moose”) was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on January 18, 1937. He moved to Toronto, Ontario in his teens where he met the love of his life, Margaret and soon thereafter, Bryan and Marg started their family. They fell in love with Victoria after vacationing out here and made the move to the West Coast in the early 1970’s with family in tow.

With a keen eye of attention to detail and problem solving, Bryan excelled in mechanics and trouble-shooting when the need ever arose. These attributes were instrumental in his career while working as a Clerk at the Toronto police station, an instructor at Humber College teaching marine mechanics, his time at Philbrooks Boatyard, and his time at the Institute of Ocean Sciences, where he retired from his 15-year career as a manager in the Mechanical Division, in the mid 1990’s.

Bryan was not just all work and no play. In his early years, he loved camping, tinkering on cars and anything mechanical. In later years, he swapped to tinkering on computers and electronic gadgets, but his real passion was cruising! Bryan and Marg were well on their way to complete their 50th cruise but unfortunately did not get the chance to do so.

Bryan will be remembered for his love and support of his family and friends, his love for animals (RIP Rover, Fluffy, Brandy, Terra, Shadow) and for lending a helping hand where needed.

Sincere thanks to the many doctors and nurses who have cared for Bryan, in particular, Dr. Young, as well as the medical staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital for the special care and attention in his final days. A very special thanks goes to Bryan and Marg’s dear neighbour, Mary Ellen, and to Carol, for always being there in their time of need.

A funeral service will be held at Sands Funeral Chapel, 1803 Quadra Street at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
