Ormiston, Russell, Willson, P.Eng.
May 19, 1919 – February 15, 2014
It is with great sadness that the family of Russell Ormiston(94) announce the passing of the last remaining Ormiston boy. Russell leaves behind loving wife of 34 years Claire and son Charles Ormiston and daughter Shelley Moore (Kevin Moore). Russell was born and raised in a farming community of Tantallon, Saskatchewan. He is pre-deceased by his parents, William Ormiston and Ruth Winchester Ormiston and brothers, Alexander (Pat and wife Evie), Jim (and wife Elenor) and twin brother Stewart. Russell most recently resided in Victoria, BC but had also lived in retirement in Vernon BC. He was an engineer at heart. He graduated from U of S as a Civil Engineer in 1940 and retired in 1982. His career included construction (roads, dams and pipelines) as well as the oil industry across BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. The project that he was most proud of was his contribution to the building of the Alaska highway. This exposure to the north resonated with Russell and a deep love of the north was born. He celebrated numerous later trips on the highway that he helped to build. Like so many his age, in 1942 he shipped overseas and became a tail gunner in the RCAF. He was a rare survivor.
Russell had a love of animals, most especially horses, and he passed and shared that love and respect with his daughter Shelley. On retirement, his dream of boating and fishing at the coast with beloved wife Claire became a reality and they lived in Victoria where they raised their son Charles. Russell was a deeply devoted man to the creator and was a participant in the local churches in the communities that he lived and worked. Their last association was Knox Presbyterian Church in Vernon. On behalf of Russell, his family would like to say thank-you to the compassionate and loving staff at Central Care in Victoria. Their care and compassion to him and family over the past five years has truly been the hands of God. Also special thank-you to Dr Leong who was an angel on earth and gave Russell the greatest care and respect that can be given to a fellow human.
A celebration of life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2964 Richmond Rd, Victoria, BC at 2:30pm Friday, February 28, 2014.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC SPCA Provincial Office, 1245 East 7th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5T 1R1; 1-800-665-1868; www.spca.bc.ca/support/donate; can be made in memory of Russell Willson Ormiston.
