It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Joan Wachtin (nee Goldman) of Shawnigan Lake. She passed away peacefully the morning of October 23rd with family members at her side.

Joan was born a twin in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a teen-ager, she moved with her family to San Bernardino, California where she graduated from high school. She married Steve Wachtin of Los Angeles in 1962. They moved to Fallbrook, California shortly after with Joan's son Ted ('56). They started up a printing company (Village Printers) and soon had sons born 11 months apart (Randy '63 & Mark '64). A daughter was born in 1967 (Heidi). In late summer, 1970, Joan and family adventured on a journey that found them land on Vancouver Island. There they stayed, living in Port Alberni that first year before settling in the Shawnigan Lake community, 30 miles north of Victoria. There was a spell in Victoria for one year (1973-74) where Joan and her husband Steve purchased and ran Popular Press Printers, a letterpress printing company on Store Street where Market Square is now. They moved the printing company to Shawnigan Lake (1975) as the Market Square property was being developed. They raised their family and ran their print shop in Shawnigan Lake until they retired in 1998. Her husband Steve passed away suddenly in September of 1999. Joan was a compositor and proofreader by trade. She lived in Shawnigan Lake in the family home near the village until 2015 before moving to Victoria to be in the care of her family there.

Joan was a loving character in every sense of the word and true to her passions of writing, rhyming poetry, drawing and advocating change in laws to legalization of marijuana, just to name a few. She was stoic in every way to her final breath.

There are many 'Joanism's' that an extensive range of family and friends have been blessed to have ever been bestowed with while in her company. She always took time to write and keep in touch the 'old fashioned' way.

Joan is predeceased by her husband Steve Wachtin (1938-1999), her mother Mary Goldman (Hartstein) (1913-1973) and her father Harold Goldman (1912-1953)

She is survived by:
Her Sister & Brother-In-Law, Judy & Rex Widener of Buhl Idaho.
Her Sister-In-Law, Annie Terrick of Los Angeles, California
Her Son & Daughter-In-Law, Ted & Alarica Allen
Her Step Daughter & Son-In-Law, Deborah Wachtin & Michael Schepps of El Segundo California and their son, Caden
Her Son & Daughter-In-Law, Randy & Jan Wachtin of Victoria BC and their three children; Amelia Patillo (Luca) of Vancouver, BC; Carley Wachtin of Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Joel Wachtin of Victoria, BC
Her Son & Partner, Mark Wachtin & Marine McDonnell of Victoria BC and Mark's son, Jude Wachtin of Sooke BC.
Her Daughter & Partner, Heidi Wachtin & Julie Frank of Hillsborough, New Jersey and their children; Micah, Sarah & Will
Her Nephew John Vinzant of Buhl, Idaho
Her Niece Traci Terrick of San Francisco, California
Her Niece Alison Bennett of San Diego, California
