Jean Mary Miller (nee: Broughton)

March 14, 1920 – February 11, 2017

On February 11, 2017 Jean Miller concluded her 96 year adventure. Her peaceful passing was comforted by her three sons, Jack, Tom & Craig.

Jean & her twin brother Frank were born in Victoria to Fred and Mary Bell (Bogle) Broughton, immigrants from England and Scotland. She embraced the freedoms of growing up in the 1920's & 30's. Riding the tram all the way to the end of the line, then hiking to Willows Beach was an adventure. The Oak Bay Tea Party – a treat. Who could ask for more than summer holidays in Cordova Bay?

Those freedoms were threatened in the 40's by WWII. But this brought prairie boy John (Jack) Mckirdy Miller to Victoria for naval training. Jean Broughton was smitten by the dashing officer she met at her girlfriend Greta's birthday party. Their romance grew during dances at the Crystal Gardens & after hours nibbles at Don Mee's in Chinatown. By 1944 Jean married & started a new life in Nova Scotia in a house that Jack built.

Together they created & raised 3 Boys: Jack, Tom and Craig.

Seeking their fortune, Jean & Jack ventured to Edmonton where they started the Miller moving business. Missing the coast, they returned to Victoria. Dowell's Moving & Storage provided their living, as well as a comfortable retirement. In their mid-50's Jean & Jack retired to Parksville.

Jean & Jack spent 20+ winters in Arizona golfing, crafting, and swimming in the sun. They travelled abroad to see family & explore the world. Jean often expresssed how fortunate she felt to share so many years of marriage & retirement together.

After Jack’s passing in 2000, Jean moved back to Victoria. She enjoyed being hosted to family dinners, BBQs & outings. She was equally proud to welcome family & friends to her apartment near University Heights. Jean's busy social schedule included golfing at Henderson, swimming at Gordon Head & playing canasta at Cedar Hill Recreation. There's no wonder friends called her feisty, resilient & active.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our sweet mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at the age of 96. Jean Miller is lovingly remembered

• by her 3 sons:

Jack (Hieke), Craig (Susie) of Victoria, Tom (Linda) of Campbell River.

• by her Grandchildren:

Maria (Steve Hutchison), Paul Miller (Christy), Caroline Miller (Stewart Hughes), Penny (Greg Lehoux), Diana (Daniel Watters), Debbi (Charlie DePape)

• by Great- Grand Children:

Nola, Anna & Leo Hutchison, Cameron, Tyler & Drake Miller, Cerys & Ffion Miller- Hughes, Katie & Tori Lehoux, Connor DePape.

We thank the Glengarry staff who cared for Mom with such compassion during her 2 year stay.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
