With sadness but fond memories we announce the rather sudden passing of Evelyn Winnifred Dunn (nee Cairns) at Victoria General Hospital on September 10, 2016.

Evelyn was born in Brockville Ontario on September 21, 1922. She grew up in Ontario and was a proud graduate of Queen’s University where she majored in English. She also served in the Canadian Air Force and it was during this time that she met and then married the one and only love of her life Harold (Hal) Dunn. Evelyn would tragically loose her brother in 1944 when he was killed while serving in WWII.

Evelyn was fulfilled and happy as a stay at home wife and mother of four children. Meanwhile her husband Hal was advancing his career with the Hudson’s Bay Company, which included many moves back and forth across western Canada. She was adept at creating new homes, new friendships, and settling the kids at new schools. The family would move from Saskatoon to Vancouver, to Calgary and to Winnipeg, then back again to most. When the children grew older Evelyn took up golf and it became her favourite pastime. Prior to retirement Hal & Evelyn purchased a hardware business in Victoria where Evelyn ran the sub post office. In her spare time she enjoyed her home on the Esquimalt Lagoon and her new island grandchildren. Unfortunately Evelyn would be widowed when Hal died unexpectedly in 1983 at the age of 62 in the store just a short three months before their joint retirement.

Evelyn moved back to the mainland for several years living in Abbotsford and Sardis while enjoying and babysitting the grandchildren there (Holly’s) and for a short time Garth’s children were included before he moved his family back to the Victoria. This was a happy time for Evelyn, aside from the grandchildren she made some new and wonderful friends who, oh yes, played golf.

Sadly her 42-year-old son, Kevin, who was a single dad, would contract terminal cancer and Evelyn moved back to the Island to participate in his care before he died in 1999. Evelyn had purchased and moved into a patio home in Duncan although several years later she would suffer a mild stroke which required a final move into an independent living facility in Langford. She has remained there for more than 10 years until her recent death.

Evelyn is survived by three of her children: Son Geoffrey (Sue)Dunn, Daughter Harlyn/Holly (Don) Hunter, Son Garth (Esther) Dunn and further survived by eleven Grandchildren: Chris (Rebecca)Dunn , Darienne (Spencer) & Trevor Dunn; Lyndsay (Chad) Huntington, Kim (Ryan)Paterson, Lesley (Joey) Buick; Andrew & Kyle Dunn; Chris (Kim) Dunn, Steven & William Dunn; and further by another nine Great Grandchildren
