On Thursday, January 5th, 2017, Boudina Spruyt left this earthly domain to join her husband, Jacques (1973) and her son Hubert (2000).

Boudina was much loved by her 8 children, 15 grandchildren and 21 (plus) great-grandchildren.

Boudina was born in 1917 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. The youngest of 7 children, it was necessary for her oldest sister to go into service to make room for her when she was born.

A shy, bright and happy child, Boudina made friendships that endured her lifetime. In school, she excelled, especially in gymnastics astonishing us once years later by doing a handstand in the dining room. All her skills and talents honed while a nursemaid for a wealthy family came into good use in raising her large family. And, her apprenticeship as a milliner assured her 5 daughters the most attractive Sunday bonnets and wedding headpieces.

In 1953, Boudina and Jacques made the brave decision to leave war torn Holland in the hopes of providing a better life for their children. It is a testimony to their strong Christian faith, their determination and stamina, that they endured and triumphed over their hardship in creating a new life for us all. Boudina and Jacques did their best to create a happy childhood from Sunday drives for ice cream to loading up the old ’47 Dodge with 10 passengers, row boat, tents, etc. for camping trips to Sproat Lake. What a sight!

Widowed young, Boudina embraced her life supporting herself looking after ‘her ladies’; travelling to family in Europe and eagerly hopping on the bus to Reno with her friends. Her grandchildren and she loved Tourist in Your Own Town; St Nicholas in the Inner Harbour and Dutch dancing at FolkFest. She loved her picnics; whether at Beacon Drive Inn or the top of Mt. Tolmie with coffee and cake.

Boudina will always be present in the memories of her surviving sons and daughters: Anton (Sheila) Spruyt, Bart (Pat) Spruyt, Margo (John) Machacek, Ann (Bob) Francis, Lisa Allan, Boudien (Robert) Hannam, Josephine (Ron) Davis and their families.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 12th by Father W. Hann at Holy Cross Parish, 4049 Gordon Head. Reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Boudina’s memory to a charity of your choice.

Wel Te’ruste, Moeder. Alles is gedaan.
